People in Denholme can enjoy four bank holiday weekend events next month to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Organisers will be hard at work arranging a concert, six-a-side cricket tournament and “street party in the park”. There will also be a special church service.

Denholme town mayor Councillor Anne Jay said additional volunteers to help stage the celebrations would be most welcome. She said she and her colleagues were particularly interested in hearing from people willing to help out at the party in Foster Park.

“We’ve got marquees to set up and we’ve got to make sure the park is clean,” she said. “We need to get it through to dog owners to clear up after their pets because there will be a lot of children playing there.”

The weekend fun will begin on the evening of Saturday, June 2, with a concert featuring six decades of music and dance in Denholme Mechanics’ Institute.

Tickets are free, but only a limited number are available. The tickets are now available from Denholme Post Office and Denholme Conservative Club.

The concert, at 7.30pm, will include performances by the village choir and local youngsters.

Beginning at 10.30am on Sunday, June 3, there will be a Diamond Jubilee service for people of all ages in the Shared Church.

From 12.30pm that day there will be a six-a-side cricket tournament on the village cricket field.

Coun Jay said four teams had entered so far, adding that organisers would like another two teams to get involved.

On Monday, June 4, starting at 2pm, people are invited to a 1950s-style tea party in Foster Park.

Entertainment will include a brass band, face painting, balloon modelling and children’s games. The Scouts will also give people the chance to have a go at climbing.

Coun Jay said there would be a nominal charge for food and refreshments. “We’re asking neighbours and families to get together and bring tables into the park,” she said. “We hope to be able to sit down together for the tea itself at 3pm.”

People willing to help run the weekend festivities, or who are interested in entering the cricket tournament, should contact Coun Jay on (01535) 274257, or leave a message for her at the Mechanics’ Institute.
