A £2M investment has been promised for Oxford’s parks pavilions.

Oxford City Council is to invest more than £2m refurbishing the 14 buildings that are used by city sports teams.

It comes after consultation into city parks last year showed residents wanted them brought up to scratch.

Parks supervisor Chris Bell said: “Our consultation survey last year with the public highlighted some positive areas that users are really pleased about.

“They also highlighted a number of further improvements they would like to see to the parks, including the refurbishment or rebuilding of sports pavilions and toilets.

“As a result of this feedback we will be investing in the toilets at Florence and Cutteslowe Parks, and we are working with national sporting bodies and local communities to improve and refurbish our sports pavilions “I would encourage residents and users to take part in this survey and give us feedback about our parks.”

Earlier this week the city council’s executive board was told there was a “maintenance backlog” for the city’s pavilions and that several were in a “very poor condition”.

Some pavilions have been already been refurbished with the help of sports clubs such as the Banbury Road North pavilion which was spruced up with the help of Oxford Hawks Hockey Club.

Neil Biggs, of Oxford Hawks, said: “These facilities are important for playing sport and we have always worked well with the council.

“Our pavilion is probably used by around 600 people and we completely modernised it.”

Now residents have another chance to give their views on their local parks, play areas and pavilions.

The city council has launched its annual consultation to find out what the people of the city think of any open spaces which are owned by the council. Its deadline for comments to be submitted is Monday, December 31.
