The 02 Academy’s application to open until 2am most nights and 4am at weekends is the opposite of what this city needs as we try to balance the needs of students and long-term residents.

A minority of students returning home from the O2’s ‘Fuzzy Ducks’ night have given the majority of students a bad name by shouting, swearing, kicking over bins and urinating in residential areas.

The 02 must show it cares about Oxford and is not a cut-throat, faceless corporation, by withdrawing this application and taking more responsibility for the behaviour of their customers when they leave the venue.

I hope the universities will also come out against this application in recognition that they rely on the good will of long-term residents and to protect their reputation.

Thankfully, Labour councillors have taken a lead in calling in the application so it is voted on by elected councillors.

There is still time for residents to object to the application before the vote and I hope they will join me and many others in doing so.
