A SPORTS pavilion looks set to be built for Oxford’s youngest college.

Green Templeton College, off Woodstock Road, has submitted a planning application to construct a pavilion which will be used for a maximum of 10 years.

It will replace the college’s current gym, which has space for just one rowing machine and one treadmill.

The site is at the back of houses in Observatory Street, in what are described as “redundant gardens”.

There will also be space set aside for families who live in college-owned family accommodation on the street. Neighbours responding to the application have so far been overwhelmingly positive.

Merrivale Square resident Eduardo Lopez said: “I believe this is a great initiative from the college.

“This building will provide space for active young people to engage in sport within college space minimising any negative impact in the community as a whole.”

Delbush Avenue resident Andrew Symington said: “I am well aware of how desperately the college members require a common indoor community space.”

“I am exceptionally pleased with the current plan. The location is discreet, and the building itself will not be viewable from neighbouring properties.”

The college, which was officially opened in 2008 after the merger of Green College and Templeton College, is currently fundraising for a more permanent home for its sports facilities.

The application is currently being considered by Oxford City Council.
