LIAM Davis insists he is not worried by the increasing competition for Oxford United’s left back slot now Tony Capaldi is returning to full fitness.

The 25-year-old is likely to start against his former club this evening, but United’s first choice left back is set to come under pressure for his shirt in the final weeks of the season.

Capaldi has been out for the entire season with back and knee problems, but was named on the bench for the first time last weekend.

The Northern Ireland international’s experience is seen as a valuable commodity by U’s boss Chris Wilder, while Anthony Tonkin is also waiting for a chance.

But Davis welcomed the competition and feels it will not affect him.

He said: “I’m always on my toes, looking to do extra things in training, so I’m on top of my game, regardless of who else is coming into the position.

“It’s obviously a motivation and good to have a competitive squad, but I’m the type of person who is always trying to do better anyway.”

Tonight, Davis returns to Sixfields for the first time since being released last summer after three years with the Cobblers.

The former Coventry City trainee played further forward at Northampton, but thinks the position he has been asked to play with the U’s this season is his best role.

He said: “Different managers prefer me in different positions, some prefer me as an attacking winger and others like me starting from deep.

“I don’t mind coming from deep, I have enjoyed the position as an attacking left back.

“I’m happy there, I think it suits me and I’m probably going to stick at it.”
