SIX thousand runners wanted for the 2012 Oxford Half Marathon in aid of Helen and Douglas House

Plans for the second Oxford Half Marathon are on track, with a completely redesigned route to take more runners.

Last year, more than 2,000 people pounded the streets of the city and organisers are hoping this year’s event will be even bigger.
The new route, agreed this week, will travel past the Iffley Road running track, through Christ Church Meadow and through Oxford Academy, as well as the Mini Plant.

The Oxford Mail is media partner for the event.

Organiser Andy Heyes said: “We are hoping it will be even bigger and we are looking at getting between 5,000 and 6,000 runners.

“The authorities have all been brilliant and were all unanimous that they wanted it to take place again.”

Once again the race, on Sunday, October 14,will start and finish at the Kassam Stadium and it will take in some of Oxford’s best sights.

And organisers are hoping to make it more of a family day out by including activities at the stadium for those who are waiting for their friends and family, as well as entertainment along the route itself.

Last year’s half marathon was won by James Bellward from Crawley who completed the race in one hour, 11 minutes and three seconds.

The event is being sponsored by Mini Plant Oxford. Last year raised more than £20,000 for  East Oxford-based hospice Helen and Douglas House.

Poppy Hanbury, activity events fundraiser for Helen and Douglas House, said: “We are so pleased to be the chosen charity for the second year.

“It would be great if people signed up to run on behalf of Helen and Douglas House, especially as this year we are celebrating 30 years of Helen House, the world’s first children’s hospice.”

The entrance  fee for members of a UKA-affiliated running club or association is £29, and £31 for unaffiliated runners.

Registration is already open and those who enter before April 8 save £3 and get free priority parking at the stadium.
