PLANS have been unveiled for a new hotel in the centre of Oxford which will definitely give guests a room with a view.

Brighton One Ltd has submitted a planning application to Oxford City Council to turn empty offices above the branches of Wine Rack and Cheltenham & Gloucester in George Street into a 43- bedroom hotel.

A fourth storey will be added to the building, providing panoramic views across the city courtesy of large windows which will “maximise both the daylight and sunlight benefits of the rooftop location”.

The fourth floor, which will be slightly smaller than the rest of the building, is in keeping with other buildings in George Street, the application says.

And it says the modern design will respect the scale, height and proportion of the surrounding buildings.

The hotel’s entrance would be on George Street with the reception on the first floor.

No car parking is planned and guests would be expected to use public car parks, such as the Worcester Street car park at the bottom of George Street.

The plan is the latest in a series of new hotel projects, including a similar scheme on the opposite side of George Street.

City councillor Colin Cook, cabinet member for city development, welcomed the new hotels in principle.

He said: “We need more medium- and low-priced hotels because there is a gap in the market.

“The fact that there is demand for these hotels is a good thing. We are very much supportive.”
