Cemetery tests led to blackout

Work to investigate a possible cemetery in Horspath Road, Cowley, caused a power cut to 100,000 homes and businesses.

The power cut just before noon on Tuesday lasted just under an hour, with many people experiencing shorter blackouts and flickering electricity supply.

A spokesman for Oxford City Council said s sub contractor doing tests at the site for potential new burial space in Oxford went through an electricity cable.

This story isn't half as interesting as I was first led to believe. It sounded like Horspath Road houses had been built on an ancient burial ground which, in the event of torrential rain, could have left us with hoards of exposed skeletons and the possibility of a little girl with a toy clown at the end of her bed communicating with the after life through the static frequency of her television. Instead, I've been left disappointed that the contractors were merely searching for potential space for a new burial site. Not nearly as exciting.

Doesn't say much for the sub-contractor, did he not look at any utility blueprints, or use geophysics before digging his holes?

Can't they just cremate people to save space?
