Man to pay back £8K after drugs charge

ABINGDON: A 26-year-old man has had more than £8,000 confiscated after being found with drugs.

Alexander Jones was ordered by Oxford magistrates to pay back £8,101 under the Proceeds of Crime Act.

Jones, of Abbott Road, Abingdon, was stopped by police while driving on May 16 and found with heroin, cocaine and cannabis.

He admitted possessing Class A and B drugs, was given a 15-month conditional discharge.

I also did a double-take when i read this, but one would assume that the magistrates had some sort of social reports and if, for example, the young man currently has a job and family support perhaps he has a better chance of getting back on the straight and narrow by keeping those rather than locking him up with other criminals and reducing his chance of gainful employment in the future. Not to mention the cost of keeping him in prison - and probably on benefits when he comes out.

Strange comments above, he was only charged with possession, not dealing..
