Hotel chain plans budget accommodation

BUDGET hotel chain Travelodge is planning to build a four-storey motel close to the Redbridge park and ride site in Oxford.

The chain has submitted a planning application to the city council to build the 83-bed hotel on three and four storeys on the former Motor World site, on the corner of Abingdon Road and Old Abingdon Road.

A plan to build a three-storey office block on the Jewson Holdings-owned site in 2001 was turned down by the city council and it is currently occupied by a UK Bathroom Warehouse showroom.

As part of the new plan, existing buildings next to the Redbridge park-and-ride site would be demolished to make way for the hotel, 45 parking spaces and bin and cycle storage.

The latest hotel scheme follows the announcement that a £350,000 10-bedroom boutique hotel in George Street, called The Bocardo, will open above Jamie’s Italian restaurant in April.

Oxford City Council’s executive member for city development Colin Cook said: “Oxford has a lot of high-cost hotel accommodation but we do need more in the medium to lower range and Travelodge would fit the bill.

“Not every family coming to visit a student wants to stay at the Randolph – some people are looking for something a bit more cheap and cheerful.

“A key consideration is parking because we would not want hotel guests to be using the neighbouring park-and-ride.”

Huw Mellor, of planning agents Kemp and Kemp, is handling the application for Travelodge Hotels and Anglo Holt Construction Ltd.

He said: “As far as we are aware, the site is still owned by Jewson Holdings and Travelodge is looking to provide budget hotel accommodation in South Oxford.

“It’s a full planning application and we expect it to be dealt with by the council’s west area planning committee in May.

“The current occupants of the site would have to leave to make room for the Travelodge.”

Steve Bower, a member of staff at UK Bathroom Warehouse in Abingdon Road, said: “We are not aware of this plan and will carry on trading.”

In December, the council approved plans by Sojourn Hotels to convert a row of properties in St Michael’s Street. And in Sandford, 38 new bedrooms will be created in two blocks at the Oxford Thames Four Pillars Hotel, after South Oxfordshire District Council granted planning permission.

Premier Inn is also planning to increase the number of bedrooms at its hotel at the Milton Interchange off the A34 near Didcot.

Travelodge also has hotels at Oxford’s Peartree roundabout, at Bicester Cherwell Valley close to junction 10 of the M40, in Burford, and in Thame.

Sounds like a very good use of the site. Perhaps there'll be an on-site restaurant and bar?

Not sure if 45 parking spaces is sufficient for an 80+ bedroom hotel.

I hope the hotel & car-park will have good security 24/7, Redbridge Hollow is within walking distance.

Why shouldn't they use it, if they are prepared to pay £1.50 a go? If the hotel was situated anywhere else guests would be perfectly entitled to use it just like anybody else.

This exactly what Oxford is in need of. There is an acute shortage of low price accomodation available around the city.

Friends of mine often stay at the hotel by the Kassam stadium, for an average of £70 per night (not bad). I hope this motel, if if goes ahead, will be cheaper.

Maybe even a small supermarket and post office in reception. That will please Mr Nisa.

good idea, just what is needed. and adding some jobs to boot.redbridge P&R is rarely full, so, if they are prepared to pay their £1.50, why not let hotel guests use it? most hotels in oxford are beyond the price range of normal people, at over £100/night, so a budget hotel is wanted, and, being right next to a P&R and the A34, it is a spot on place

I'm all in favour.

Anybody care about, or understand the 'Mr Nisa' crack?

Does anybody care about or understand the Mr Nisa crack?

Yes, we understand the allusion. "Mr Nisa" (?Best One?) may care, most others won't.

Great idea and location, BTW. Redbridge Hollow needs similar redevelopment for the greater benefit of Oxford and the wider community. Present occupants could "travel" to a new site with amenities near Badgers' Wood. A Wheatley-style pyramidal lockup might be nice or handy, to add character. (Sympathies in advance to any badgers in the vicinity.)

Ah, but they're travellers, so they don't travel.

I don't personally know any residents of Redbridge Hollow (and yes, I do what it is), but this seems an unnecessarily offensive post.

I assume that Diligaf2010 and Simplicimus have clear evidence to show that the existing Redbridge car park suffers significantly higher levels of car crime than other areas of the city?

I am sure Travelodge could give the residents of Redbridge Hollow some employment, there will be quite a lot of tarmac necessary in the car park!

oh and by the way it's Dilligaf2010.
And who was being offensive, I certainly wasn't, I don't recall casting aspersions at anybody.
Perhaps it's just your way of thinking.

Dilligaf2010, it is quite clear what aspersions you were making.

If you made similarly prejudiced remarks on here about black people, or gays, you would most certainly be barred by the OM, and possibly arrested. So what is the difference?

What's the difference between that and the similar published and spoken hatred aimed at students in East Oxford?

As it stands, there is a large empty former builders yard behind Tesco in the Cowley road. The locals were demanding that it be used for families... The occupants of Redbridge Hollow tend to be very close-knit families, which would suggest that they would be very welcome.

I think its a great idea. Its been an eyesore for years there.
Ps Being a former resident of Kennington Rd (Oxford end) I can confirm that many things have been stolen from what was Templeton College by residents of Redbridge Hollow.
