YES, it’s the same old, same old – cyclists flouting the law when what they really should be doing is getting off their bikes and walking down Cornmarket and Queen Street between 10am and 6pm.

Full marks to the police for taking action, but doing it once or twice a year frankly isn’t enough. They need to be alert to this all year round.

They are not draconian in their approach, and it would be wrong if they were, but maybe staging such an operation for a morning or afternoon once a month might finally drive the message home.

Cyclists need to understand that the simple act of cycling doesn’t elevate them to a higher moral plane.

It’s fantastic that they do cycle, and hopefully even more people in our city will – a point of view shared incidentally by the police – but they have to remember that the Highway Code exists for everyone’s benefit, motorists, pedestrians and cyclists alike.

Of course, in this instance, it’s the most vulnerable group the police are concerned about in what are, in effect, two pedestrianised streets.

Cyclists failing to abide by the rules are putting the health and safety of those who use these streets at risk.

And that means children, senior citizens and mums with prams, all of whom are, by definition, vulnerable.

So please, if you are cyclist, be a proud and careful cyclist, not an indifferent one.
