THE heart of East Oxford could pulse to the sounds of thousands of revellers for a special event over the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee weekend.

Organisations in the ‘magic triangle’ between Cowley and Iffley roads are hoping to close off several streets and host a string of events to make the most of the extended weekend.

Activities will raise cash for children’s respite hospice Helen and Douglas House in Leopold Street.

Ian Nolan, based at the Old Boot Factory, in St Mary’s Road, said: “There might be a couple of drag queens, but that’s the only reference you’ll find to Her Majesty.

“We wanted to celebrate the rich and diverse community of East Oxford.”

The plan is to close Leopold Street, St Mary’s Road, Hurst Street and part of Magdalen Road. The Rusty Bicycle will offer beer-tasting and a barbecue, while gastro cafe OxFork will spill out on to the streets, with tables and chairs set up in the road for tea parties.

The Old Boot Factory will offer workshops, dance and music, while activities such as egg and spoon races and three-legged dashes are planned.

And contributions are being sought for a photographic exhibition on the history of the area.

Mr Nolan said: “The people of East Oxford love a good street party.”

He said he hoped 2,000 or more people would attend.

The final date is still being confirmed, but will be during the weekend of Saturday, June 2, to Tuesday, June 5.

Drew Brammer, of OxFork, said: “We are keen to show off our part of the world.”

Lord Mayor Elise Benjamin, who lives in Magdalen Road, said: “The Jubilee is the perfect opportunity for a big community party.”

It is hoped a meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 29, to talk about plans.
