BIG crowds turned out as hunt fans took part in the centuries-old tradition of a Boxing Day hunt meet.

In Chipping Norton, more than 6,000 people saw about 80 riders take part in the Heythrop Hunt’s meet.

Senior joint master of the hunt Richard Sumner said: “Hunting is part of the countryside traditional and we are trying to keep it going.”

The hunt did not follow the scent of live foxes, instead following scent trails which had been laid out by riders earlier in the day.

The Labour Government made hunting wild animals using dogs illegal in 2005.

Mr Sumner said: “They should repeal the Act because it is an unworkable law.

“There needs to be some sort of fox control and other methods are far more cruel than hunting.”

David Carey, 39, of Carterton, attended the hunt with his three-year-old daughter Beth, pictured with one of the hounds.

He said: “It is a family tradition to go every year and Beth just loves the horses and the hounds. Being able to get that close to the hounds is fantastic.”

Heart warming to see so many enjoying traditional Christmas pastimes.

So everyone had a good time following a scent trail around. Why bother with the foxes bit?

That's like asking why fox control started in the first place, they slaughter livestock... now they are just shot, without the chance to escape...

So they've found a quicker more effective way of controlling a pest, and doubtless a more humane one as well. Sounds like progress to me.

I get the impession that somebody is jealous of people that can afford to attend hunt meetings. Does that person begrudge family holidays, buying cars, computers, etc.

I don't hunt myself but don't resent the pastime of others. Seems mean to moan.

XJX, it's not the pastime I am uncomfortable with, it's the suffering that goes with it. Nature is cruel, but lying down in the snow to give up, racked with cold and hunger, is how foxes should die, not terrified sprinting in front of a pack of dogs.

At any rate, foxes keep the rabbit population down.

If people want to ride around on a nag jumping over hedges and that, they can be my guest. It's the celebration of death and suffering, smearing blood on children's faces, disrupting roads, railways and farms that many people object to. It was acceptable 200 years ago, but then so was bear-baiting, ****-fighting, dog-fighting, slavery and so on.
