FOOTBALLERS gathered to play a match in memory of their friend Cullum Miles who died in a car crash earlier this month.

Mr Miles, 25, from Kings Sutton, near Banbury, died on November 6 when the blue Vauxhall Astra he was driving left Broughton Road in Banbury and crashed down a ravine into a copse.

Back-seat passenger Stacey Westwood, 20, was also killed following the early-morning smash.

Players from Mr Miles’ team, Bodicote Sports FC, wore black armbands on Saturday in memory of their team mate.

They also completed a minute’s applause before the Oxfordshire Junior Shield game against Combe Juniors, which they won 2-0 at the White Post Road ground in Bodicote.

Team manager Jimmy Cummings, 38, said: “We play in the Banbury and District League’s premier division and Cullum had played for us for three seasons.

“He was an excellent striker and would get 20 goals a season — he was a very well-liked and popular member of the squad.

“There were about 150 people at the game, including Cullum’s partner and other members of his family.

“I think they really appreciated us organising this.

“We were all devastated when we heard about Cullum’s death and after the game we all went to the Cock Horse pub in Banbury to share our memories of him.”

When the crash happened, the Vauxhall Astra was travelling towards Bloxham and crashed before the turn for North Newington.

Mr Miles, who was a self-employed painter and decorator, and his friend Miss Westwood had both attended Banbury School.
