WHEN I read the report of Mark Woodward’s accident on the M40, I felt sorry for him.

When you drive over the same route, day after day, the mind inevitably turns to other things and all you really notice is what is going on ahead. Suddenly you wonder where you are, something we have all experienced at various times.

This must have been the case with Mr Woodward. It was unfortunate that the exit route he accidentally took was not compatible with the speed of the vehicle. Had this been an exit with a less sharp bend, he would, no doubt, have returned to the motorway and continued with his journey with very little said. Overall, it was really fortunate that no-one was killed.

Not only did Mr Woodward lose his job, suffered a fine and had a disqualification, but he must suffer the thoughts of what went on that late December evening for the rest of his life.

I’m surprised that this case ever came to court, but, since it did and Mr Woodward was found guilty of careless driving, the judge, who must have felt the same as I do, handed out the minimum sentence.
