COMMENT: If anyone can raise £1M, she can

JANIE HAMPTON is most certainly a mum for a million.

Mrs Hampton, from Temple Cowley, has been nominated for the Tesco Mum of the Year award and you have to be impressed with what she has done.

The 59-year-old founded a charity to renovate a medical ship in Africa to bring healthcare to remote villages for the first time.

She has led a fundraising effort that pulled in more than £1m and when the boat is renovated it will be able to reach communities that have no roads or clinics.

There are plenty of good causes and worthy work by people for communities poorer than our own.

But you have to marvel at the determination and leadership shown by Mrs Hampton to raise £1m from businesses, Oxford residents and through other fundraising events.

However, another £1m is needed before the boat can be operational.

Given that Mrs Hampton’s project has raised the initial £1m in two years, we back her to hit her final total.

As she said: “I just keep thinking: ‘I’ve started now, so I may as well finish’.”
