Wetherspoon will name its Witney pub The Company of Weavers, we have discovered.

The pub chain has taken over the former Palace nightclub in Market Square, but no opening date has yet been announced.

Architects RJD have been brought in to design the building.

Architectural technician Peter Wyld said the name had been chosen to reflect the history of blanket-making in the town.

He said: “From a design point of view, we are trying to give it a slightly industrial feel, but that will be quite subtle and it will still be very comfortable and warm.”

He said this would be achieved by using materials such as metal in parts of the interior.

And he said the history of blanket-making would be celebrated with the use of primary colours in the finishes and carpets.

The pub won planning permission to convert the nightclub in February, despite strong opposition.
