A MEMORIAL bench unveiled in memory of a popular East Oxford newsagent will be a “wonderful legacy”, acc-ording to his friends and family.

Father-of-two Jagat ‘Jagga’ Singh Daudhar, who ran Daudhar News in Horspath Road, Cowley, died from a viral infection in hospital in March, aged 37.

On Thursday his family and friends celebrated his life as the bench was unveiled at St Francis School, next door to his shop.

Headteacher Gillian Lipscombe said the school had paid for it in tribute to the contribution made by Mr Daudhar.

She said: “Both his children attended the school and Mr Daudhar was always a very supportive parent. He also played a big part in the local community.”

The former Peers School pupil organised regular coach trips to the seaside for the Horspath Road community, along with visits to Legoland in Windsor and Weymouth.

He also organised a ‘Cuppa Day’, featured in the Oxford Mail, which encouraged residents to come into the shop for a tea and a chat.

Mr Daudhar’s family said they were delighted with his memorial.

His aunt Banso Biersack said: “The bench will be a wonderful legacy.”

Sister Pramla Singh added: “We are delighted that this lovely bench will now stand as his memorial.”
