John Paul underlined his outstanding potential by winning the Meadowbank Grand Prix International Sprint in Edinbugh.

The 18-year-old, who attends King Alfred’s Sport & Community College, Want-age, and competed in last year’s Commonwealth Ga-mes, beat top riders from Holland, Spain, and Belgium.

In the sprint qualifying, John’s qualifying time of 11.41secs was only two hundredths slower than former champion Itmar Esteban, of Spain.

The duo justified their status as the top two seeds as they progressed through the knockout rounds to set up a mouth-watering showdown in the best-of-three final.

Paul displayed tactful and technical riding beyond his years as he tracked his opponent before powering off the final bend to win the first leg.

Then he allowed Esteban to make a long run for home on the second ride and build an advantage of several lengths before he blasted around the final corner to clinch the title by half-a-wheel.

Paul was delighted at getting his name on the trophy alongside some notable past winners such as Jason and Jamie Staff.

He represents Great Britain in the European Championships in Portugal next month and then in the world championships in Moscow in August.

JUSTYN Cannon, from RAF Benson, won the Rod Robinson Memorial 50-mile time trial, incorporating the Welsh CA Championship, in atrocious conditions at Glynneath.

His speed was too much for nearest rival, David Dickerson, of Team Echelon-Rotor, and he won by nearly two minutes in 1hr 55mins 3secs.

THREE Oxonian CC riders – Wendy Gundry, Dennis McSweeney and Lewis Hutton – beat their personal bests in the Witney 10-mile time trial.

In all, 21 Oxonian riders took part in the Oxford City Club-run event.

The field of 42 riders started off in the dry but torrential rain soon started, followed by rivers of water running across the A40 in places.

Leading Oxonian CC times – men: M Jones 20.28, R Yeatman 21.16, R Harrison 21.20.

Women: E McDermott 24.04, C Vallance 24.52, W Gundry 26.39.
