RESIDENTS annoyed by buses “thundering” up their road have created a new action group to tackle the problem.

Osler Road in Headington, Oxford, is used by buses travelling to the John Radcliffe Hospital, after they were re-directed from Headley Way in 2006.

But a new residents’ group has now been set up over worries for the safety of children.

The road, off London Road, backs on to the JR and has a special bus gate for public transport and ambulances.

The route is used by the Stagecoach No 10 bus and the No 700, run by RH Transport Services, which travels between hospitals.

Jonathan Dennis, an architect living in the street, said: “Osler Road is such a lovely road. We just have a few issues that have been coming to a head recently, so we decided to form a group to do something about it. The buses struggle to get up here. I’m all for public transport and don’t mind buses going up the street, but it’s the volume of them.

“Most people agree sending buses down a small street is ridiculous.”

The street is also home to the Hunsdon House Nursery.

Mr Dennis said: “One of our worries is traffic speed and the safety of the children.

“I think we want to get bollards or railings outside the nursery to stop children running into the street.”

But despite the problem, Mr Dennis said the road was a happy street to live on.

He said: “Once people move in, they never want to leave, so many people have been here more than 15 years.

“We are quite a family- orientated street. The houses have on average three children in them, but some have got four or five children.”

Mr Dennis has three children with his partner Abby Porter – Tiana, eight, Zara, four, and PJ, three.

He said: “This is just one problem we would like to change. We have a fantastic road and fantastic spirit.”

Fellow resident Kevin Burrell said: “The whole transport infrastructure of the road has almost reached crisis point.

“We are living on the road next door to one of the country’s largest hospitals. People need to be able to go there and there isn’t enough space for parking.”

The father-of-five added: “Everyone needs to be taken into consideration and, until now, we have been completely ignored.”

Stagecoach spokesman Chris Child said: “We recently met residents to hear a number of their concerns.

“Osler Road is an important link in providing a quick and reliable service for passengers using route 10 between the JR, Headington, Cowley and the city centre.

“A number of issues were raised about inconsiderate parking which makes it difficult for traffic to pass each other along the route, and we are working with the city council, county council and the police to try to solve these issues.”

The first meeting of the group is planned this week.
