YOUNG artists Josie McPherson and Ella Burt were among scores of children flexing their creative muscles at an umbrella-painting workshop.

The friends, who both attend St Philip and St James CofE Primary School in North Oxford, took part in the event at Summertown Library on Saturday as part of the Artweeks programme.

Ella, 11, of Summertown, decided to paint faces on her umbrella.

She said: “They were not really portraits, but made-up faces.

“It was good fun.

“There will be a parade of everyone’s work next week and I am looking forward to showing it there and seeing everyone else’s.”

The pair are the youngest to exhibit at Artweeks with their work Junk Jungle, made out of recycled materials.

Artweeks, now in its 29th year, is a three-week celebration of the county’s artistic and creative talent.

All shows are free, and are carried out at artists’ homes, studios, or galleries throughout the county.

Last year, more than 107,000 people visited almost 500 venues.

Exhibits include sculpture and ceramics, furniture, mosaics, jewellery, painting, photography and textiles.
