Police today released a CCTV image of two men wanted in connection with a series of arson attacks on for sale signs in Headington.

There have been 18 incidents within the past two weeks where signs have been set alight, as well as an incident at Waitrose in Headington where the CCTV footage was captured.

The incident at Waitrose happened on April 8 at 3.15am. In the footage, two men are seen setting fire to a kebab box which has in turn set fire to a yellow grit bin and this has been linked to the other offences.

PC Zoe Eele said: “This is within the same time frame as the other offences. They all happened between March 13 and April 22 between 2.30am and 4.30am.”

At one of the incidents, paramedics travelling along the London Road saw a sign on fire. The paramedics pulled the sign down and exinguished the flames, which were starting to spread to a connecting fence.

At another one of the properties, damage was caused to a fence, but the fire did not spread any further.

PC Zoe Eele added: “Since these incidents there have been others, the most recent happened on April 22, and I would urge anyone with information about these incidents to come forward and speak to me as soon as possible.

“Most of these fires were started along the London Road and in the Sandhills area. London Road is a busy road at all times of the day with traffic coming in and out of the city, and I believe someone must have seen something.

“Other than destroying the signs, the fires haven’t caused too much damage and we are keen to catch the person responsible before it potentially escalates and someone gets hurt.”
