CONTROVERSIAL decisions nationally should not affect the Lib Dems’ reputation in Oxfordshire, Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg claimed last night.

The Liberal Democrat party leader praised local party councillors as he toured a top research centre at Harwell Science and Innovation Campus near Didcot.

He said: “I admit what we are having to do in Government nationally is controversial and in some respects down right unpopular but I don’t think that retracts from the outstanding performance of the Lib Dems in the Vale.

“Lib Dem councillors have worked so hard and so constantly and they are now delivering a successful council.”

Mr Clegg visited Harwell’s Diamond Light Source, which uses state-of-the-art technology to produce incredibly bright lights and study atoms.

Lib Dems’ reputation

No Nicky boy you ruined their reputation and any future hopes when you jumped into bed with Cameron.

In the Vale the Lib-Dems, and in South Oxfordshire, the Conservatives have worked together ahead of the game to ensure front line services did not need to be cut when central government grants were cut. They reduced costs by working together, and putting in joint contracts. Both Abingdon and Didcot now have plans for redeveloping their town centres. I see all of that as good and positive. Admittedly there is still much to do but it is moving in the right direction, and I hope whoever gets elected will continue with such pragmatic positive policies. I would prefer to see consensus politics rather than coalition politics.

Really, fearofabingdon, - is that your view? There we all were thinking that it was because the Vale had been so badly run that it was the only option for them go into partnership with the nearest Conservative authority. We were also thinking that all those accounting problems, black-holes and mishaps meant that the Vale Lib Dems had to turn to someone else to run their services. Didn't the CEO and many of the directors come from SODC rather than VWHDC?
