Rover Oxford Ladies’ bid to avoid the drop from South Clubs’ League Division 2 suffered a blow when they surrendered a two-goal lead in losing 3-2 at home to Brighton.

However, it was an impressive comeback from Brighton.

Rover made an excellent start, with some brilliant passing by Suzie Williams and Hie Sawyer setting up Lynn Cockshott to slot home.

Against the run of play, Rover scored again, Will-iams’s tight-angled shot beating the keeper.

In the second half, Brighton kept pressing and forcing short corners.

Eventually one found the back of the net, via a deflection, and they then converted another, before winning it in open play with a breakaway.

Oxford University lost 2-1 at Wycombe.

Becky Odlin struck twice as Oxford Hawks won 4-2 at Southgate to stay one point clear of Guildford at the top of Division 1.

Odlin, the league’s top scorer, opened the scoring.

Southgate levelled, but Tak-ara Haines restored Hawks’ lead by burying a drag flick.

Southgate made it 2-2 and it looked as though Hawks were going to drop points.

But in the last five minutes Anna French converted Sandra Frankland’s cross, and Odlin got a fourth.

Banbury increased their lead at the top of Division 3A despite drawing 3-3 with mid-table West Hampstead.

That was because Witney suffered a shock 3-1 defeat at lowly Southgate 2nd.

Sadie Lapper and Natasha Nunneley, from a penalty flick, put Banbury two up.

Yet West Hampstead hit back, and although the prolific Lapper then got her second, from Hayley Nunneley’s pass, the visitors equalised again.

City of Oxford chalked up two 3-0 wins – at Eastcote on Saturday, then against Teddington 2nd on Sunday.

Christine Fraser (2) and Ann-Marie Davenport scored in the first match, and Fraser, Rachel Lammey and Vicky Quantrell in the second.

l CLAIRE Werlinger scored twice, and Charlotte Burrows once, in Oxford Hawks 2nd’s 3-1 win over Reading 2nd in Premier 1 of the Trysports 3 Counties League.

Kirsty Ross’s goal against Oxford Univ 2nd gave Wallingford a magnificent 14 wins out of 14 matches.
