There is no doubt, Coral Newman’s story is inspirational. It was mightily brave of her to talk to us and raise the issue of domestic violence.

The attack in 2008 was so horrific she thought her attacker, Mark Bray, had done enough to kill her.

The monster soaked her in petrol and set her on fire.

But, despite 60 per cent of her body being permanently disfigured and a lifetime of pain, she has refused to give up.

Tellingly she says: “If I could speak to him I would say: ‘You haven’t ruined my life, you’ve changed it... in a way it’s better.”

Not that she’ll get the chance, Bray was banged up for seven years for the brutal attack.

Coral speaks of her new friends and new inspiration in life.

It comes as Thames Valley Police unveiled the true extent of domestic violence in the county. Officers are called every three hours to deal with a problem.

The story in today’s Oxford Mail is extreme. But you will also see accounts of other horrendous attacks on women in Oxfordshire.

Furthermore, the victims are not just women. Men are also suffering and their stories are often shielded from public view.

But the message today is clear, it doesn’t matter who you are you should not suffer in silence.
