YOUNG Josh Campbell-Brakspear is gearing up to make family history by becoming the third generation to excel on the race track.

The 15-year-old, who has just picked up two motor racing crowns, started racing at the age of 10 when his grandad Walter, 75, a former stock car racer, bought him a Mini.

Now the teenager, from Didcot Road, Harwell, races every weekend in the junior 1,000cc category, reaching speeds up to 60mph on the oval courses.

Last year, he competed in every Sunday race at Standlake Arena near Witney and at Fleet Motor Club (FMC) in Aldermaston, near Reading, and won both clubs’ junior tournaments last month.

He won the FMC championship by 200 points.

When he gets his driving licence, the King Alfred School pupil wants to start racing rally cars like his uncle Roy Brakspear, 49.

Josh said: “I got into it because it is a family sport, but I enjoy all of it. I enjoy engines, the racing and I’m into cars.”

Mum Carolyne, 44, said: “It is something marvellous to watch.

“It is amazing what the little kids can actually do.Some of them are so tiny they can barely see over the steering wheel.

“My family are very race orientated. My father used to race stock cars and bangers. It is in the family and it is in his blood.

“We all encourage each other and my dad loves the fact Josh has carried the tradition on.”

Josh’s achievement is even more remarkable as he started each race at the back of the grid behind 20 other racers.

He said: “I am better than most of them but they are all pretty good.

“But it is not about winning, that is only a bonus. It is about making points and not smashing the car up.”

Josh, who still uses the same racing number his grandad did, added: “I have had a few bad accidents because of silly mistakes, doing what I should not have done – trying to get in a gap I should not have.”

Granddad Walter, of Charlton Road in Wantage, said he hoped further generations of the family would race.

He said: “I suspect some will carry it on and follow in everyone’s footsteps. It is just a bit of fun, but we have done all right out of it.”

Josh has four Minis and four motorbikes in his collection.

His stepdad David Tye, 45, prepares the cars for the races.
