HUNDREDS of cooks descended on Oxfordshire to take part in Britain’s first national jam festival.

The preserve-making competition, organised by the Women’s Institute and cooker manufacturer Stoves, was held at Denman College in Marcham, near Abingdon, over the weekend.

The two-day event featured local craft and produce and demonstrations from MasterChef 2010 winner Dhruv Baker and chef Rachel Green.

The competition, which was split into 11 categories, attracted more than 500 entries from across the country.

Rosemary Green won the ‘best in show’ award with her gooseberry and elderflower jam which wowed judges, including Pam Corbin from the River Cottage programmes.

Stoves spokesman Louise Woodward said: “It’s the first time it has been held but I know the organisers are keen to turn it into an annual event.”
