I would just like to comment on John Green’s dismissive remarks (Oxford Mail letters, October 14) about Julia Gasper, the UKIP candidate for the Barton and Sandhills by-election.

His attempt to sneer at Julia as a “serial candidate” and imply that she has no policies is an unworthy contribution to debate at this important moment.

Does it occur to Mr Green that someone might stand in more than one election because they have strong principles and a message that they want to get across to an electorate increasingly disillusioned with the main parties?

Also it is a fact that Julia has gone to great trouble to get information to every household, visit as many electors as possible, and attend forums and meetings.

I know she and UKIP have very clear policies on exposing waste by the Lib-Lab council, council leaders’ bloated salaries, listening to the concerns and wishes of local residents instead of imposing absurd policies from on high, and re-animating local democracy to make local councils genuinely accountable.

Not surprisingly, these policies get a very positive response from many voters.

I wish her the best of luck!
