If, like me, you usually stride the streets studying nothing but your shoelaces, you could be missing a treat – according to a new guide to unusual landmarks.

Discover Oxford’s Public Art is available online from this month and features street art from housing estates and hospital car parks to rooftops and roundabouts.

Laura Worsfold, Oxford City Council’s arts officer, explained: “There is so much art in Oxford that people might not see, such as works commissioned by Oxford University and by builders for different projects.

“We decided to get together with the Oxford Preservation Trust and Oxfordshire Strategic Partnership to produce this leaflet to let people know what art is there on their doorstep.”

Hidden treasures include a chandelier of glass birds and an ornate open air window – complete with spark plugs.

Debbie Dance, director of Oxford Preservation Trust, said: “Seeing all these works of art, in so many guises, brought together in one leaflet is fantastic.

“Not only does it highlight just how much Oxford has to offer, but it helps people know where to go to see them and to understand a little more of what they are about.”
