The local elections were the first chance for the electorate to let the Government know what they think about its plans for 'voluntary' ID cards since it forced the issue through Parliament.

I find it strange that Labour candidates were so unwilling to let us know their views.

The local No2ID group wrote to every candidate in Oxford to ask their views. A large number of Liberal Democrat, Green, Conservative, Respect and Independent candidates responded, overwhelmingly against, but Labour candidates were generally silent.

Don't they support their own party line? Maybe they do, but can't quite bring themselves to admit that they agree with spending billions of pounds keeping track of you and me?
