The new leader of Oxford City Council looks set to be John Goddard after he was confirmed as the Liberal Democrats' group leader at the weekend.

Following the local elections on Thursday, the Liberal Democrats have replaced Labour as the largest group on the council.

Talks will take place between Labour, Liberal Democrat and Green councillors this week to see who is going to run the council, but the most likely scenario is a Liberal Democrat minority administration with Labour in opposition.

Mr Goddard, who represents Wolvercote ward, was re-elected as group leader unanimously on Saturday, with David Rundle as his deputy.

Mr Goddard has expressed his desire to be council leader, but added: "That will depend on the acquiescence of the other two groups if they wished to obstruct us, they would have the votes to do it."

A decision on how the council will be run is expected before the Mayor-making ceremony on May 18.

Liberal Democrat councillor Jim Campbell is to be Lord Mayor, replacing Bob Price, who was elected leader of the Labour group on Saturday.

Craig Simmons was re-elected as the council's Green group leader.
