A government minister visited an Oxford school to thank pupils for helping hurricane-hit Nicaragua.
Foreign Office minister Tony Lloyd personally congratulated Cheney School's Leon Link Working Group for their hard work.
In just one term pupils from the Headington school managed to raise £1,180 to buy equipment for their twin school of San Philipe in Leon, Nicaragua, which was hit by Hurricane Mitch last year. They also persuaded firms to donate equipment to schools.
The youngsters raised the cash in a variety of ways including carol singing and a non-uniform day. Blackwells publishers also donated £500 for the working group to pass on.
Mr Lloyd was joined by Oxford's Lord Mayor Carole Roberts, city council leader John Tanner and other members of Oxford's Leon Link.
The minister said: "These young people deserve to be congratulated, they have come to the aid of their twin school in Leon by motivating themselves to raise this money. The generosity that has been shown by the people of Oxford is an inspiration."
