An Oxford first school is hoping to swap its cramped site for the more spacious grounds of the Manor football ground when Oxford United moves to its new stadium, writes Madeleine Pennell.

St Andrew's First School, which is currently on London Road, Headington, is set to become a primary under plans to reorganise schools in the city.

At the moment it takes between 50 and 60 new pupils each year, but its current site is so cramped, it would only be able to take about 30, or one class, when it becomes a primary.

There is no playing field on the site, which as a first school, St Andrew's does not need because it does not have formal PE lessons.

When it becomes a primary school it will need playing fields, although it could share the grounds at nearby Windmill School.

Built in 1894, the current building is not large enough for the school's 239 pupils and there are already two mobile classrooms.

If the primary school did not move it would need seven mobile classrooms. The idea of moving to the Manor is in its early stages and being investigated by officers at Oxfordshire County Council.

In a letter to parents, headteacher Susan Baker said: "The idea of moving St Andrew's to the Manor site when Oxford United move is being explored. There will be opportunities for parents to discuss this and put forward their views when more information is available."

The Acland Hospital wants to move from its site in Banbury Road to the Manor, which will be free from August, and last week submitted its appeal against Oxford City Council's decision to turn down its plans to demolish the stadium and build a hospital and 90 flats there. It has also submitted another, very similar, design with 87 flats, which the planning committee has yet to make a decision on.

John Browning, chairman of St Andrew's governors, said: "We don't have things that a modern building would have, like changing rooms.

"If we move to the Manor, Bury Knowle Library might move in and share the building."
