Feminist writer Germaine Greer wrestled with the past when she opened Oxfordshire Record Office's new building.

Prof Greer, author of The Female Eunuch, visited the record office to carry out research when it was based in County Hall, Oxford.

But last night she was able to see how much the archive service has improved in its new and more spacious premises at the former St Luke's Church, Cowley.

Carl Boardman, county archivist, said: "We think it's wonderful that Prof Greer has agreed to perform our official opening ceremony."
