Alec Cantwell has a historic toast to celebrate with his wife Muriel on their 60th wedding anniversary today.

He has looked into his family background and found it is the first diamond wedding among the Cantwells in more than 250 years.

They have invited more than 60 relatives and friends to celebrate at a party at The Three Ts water sports club, in their home village, Standlake.

Mr Cantwell said: "The Cantwell family has been in Standlake since the mid-18th century and, from the family tree, this is the first time they have had a diamond wedding to celebrate."

The couple married in 1942, at Ardley Parish Church. Muriel, whose maiden name was Light, lived in the village with her parents, who ran the Fox and Hounds pub.

The couple, both 81, first met in Standlake when the Lights lived there.

Mr Cantwell joined his family's building business after serving in the Army during the Second World War.

The couple have a son and daughter, four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
