A wildlife and conservation expert could be hired to help protect and develop the Letcombe Brook corridor between Wantage and Grove.

The Joint Environment Trust for Wantage, a joint forum set up by Wantage Town Council and the Vale of White Horse District Council to oversee local environmental projects, was deciding today whether to set aside £5,000 to pay for a project manager to oversee schemes to enhance and protect the area.

It was identified by the Environment Agency as a rich breeding ground for the rare water vole and other important wildlife during a survey in 1999.

The Joint Environment Trust for Grove has already agreed to set aside £5,000 to help pay for a project officer to secure Letcombe Brook's future. Members are hoping the Wantage trust will follow suit by setting aside the same amount.

Grove parish and Wantage town councils may also contribute to the project.

Grove county councillor Zoe Patrick said: "It's an area well worth preserving. It would be a great project."
