Anxious Headington residents claim construction work for a new hospital and flats at the Manor Ground will be dangerous.

About 150 people on Thursday, April 18, met the developers of the new Acland Hospital and housing at the site.

Demolition at Oxford United's former home, including removal of asbestos, is due to start on Monday, April 29, and continue until August, when building work begins.

Householders voiced their concerns about construction traffic visiting the site.

They were angry that no-one from the county council's highways department was on hand to answer their questions about traffic problems, although they had been invited to attend by Oxford City Council.

One officer who had been due to come was ill, while county councillors for the area did not attend.

Residents are worried lorries could cause an accident in the area, and asked for a promise that they would use Osler Road or Beech Road. But developers Nuffield Hospitals and Bellway Homes would not offer a guarantee.

Mother-of-three Katherine Homewood, of Beech Road, said her children frequently cycled in the area.

She said: "This development is going to be extremely dangerous. I find it inconceivable that we have something starting in nine days but there are no plans on how it's going to be managed.

"There are bound to be accidents."
