The future of one of Abingdon's leading charity fundraising organisations, the Lions, is at risk unless new members are recruited.

Membership of the 21-year-old club is down to only 12 and the strain is beginning to tell.

The club is poised to scale down its activities and if it fails to attract fresh blood in the next six months long-term prospects look bleak.

Membership secretary Steve Stephens said: "We're reaching a crisis point. Unless we can attract more members we shall have to curtail our activities.

"Next year will be crucial. I don't think the Lions Club will fold if we fail to boost membership but we would have to consider working more in partnership with other organisations."

Club president Richard Terry said: "Our membership is getting old -- I'm the youngest member at 48 and we have some in their eighties.

"We're not a closed shop but open to everyone from all walks of life."

"We want people who can put something back into the community in which they live."

Since its formation in 1981 Abingdon Lions has raised more than £160,000 for charities, local community projects, schools and the elderly.

It supports local causes and individuals not covered by national charities or the authorities.

Only last month the Lions bought two pieces of medical equipment costing £700 for Abingdon hospital.

Dilys Jackson, chairman of the League of Friends of Abingdon Hospital, said: "Over the years the Lions have been a valuable contributor to the fundraising campaign for the hospital. The League wants the work of the Lions to continue and we will publicise their appeal for members in our newsletter."

The Mayor Audrey Tamplin was saddened to hear about the club's plight.

She said: "They help so many people and organisations in the town and are a vital part of our community.

"It would be a big blow if The Lions had to reduce their work."

Plans are already under way for the annual Christmas tour when for a week in December Father Christmas will visit housing estates in Abingdon, distributing gifts to children.

For the first time, Lions members will run Santa's grotto at Millets Farm garden centre at Frilford Heath.

Anyone interested in joining the Lions can get more information from the club's membership secretary, Mr Stephens, on 01235 522308.
