An uninsured driver from Didcot who ran from the scene of an accident after driving carelessly has been disqualified for 18 months and fined £250.

Trevor Dakin, 40, was in collision with a Ford Focus on the A417, near East Challow, on June 3.

He claimed he was driving his Ford Orion to a scrapyard.

Titi Erinle, prosecuting at Didcot Magistrates' Court on Thursday, said Dakin initially fled the scene but was arrested by police after he was caught by members of the public.

Miss Erinle said: "He admitted he had been caught by two witnesses who had chased him across a field."

Dakin, of Wessex Road, who had three previous convictions for driving without insurance, admitted charges of careless driving, failing to stop after an accident, driving without insurance and driving without a licence.

He told the magistrates he knew he should not have got behind the wheel.

He said he had offered to pay compensation for the damage but was still waiting to hear the repair costs.

"I had just finished my night shift and was on my way to dispose of the car at the time," he said.

He was ordered to pay £55 towards prosecution costs.
