Final plans for the Radcliffe Infirmary move to the John Radcliffe Hospital site -- and the £20m Oxford Children's Hospital -- have been submitted to city councillors for approval.

The blueprints are part of a £125m scheme, including a new five-storey building at the John Radcliffe Hospital site, in Headington, Oxford.

The separate 106-bed children's block will have four floors, and be linked to the new hospital extension by a five storey-high glass atrium.

It will bring together paediatric facilities from the JR, as well as the nearby Churchill Hospital and the Radcliffe Infirmary, in Woodstock Road.

ORH chief executive David Highton said: "The plans for the new children's hospital will provide a comprehensive range of paediatric services under one roof.

"This is an opportunity to develop an Oxford children's hospital to rival those of other major cities in England."

Outpatient services will be based on the ground floor, medical wards will be on the first floor, the second floor will include surgical beds and parent accommodation, and offices will be at the top of the building.

The development will include services relocated from the RI, including day surgery, intensive care and neuroradiology.

The NHS is paying £5m and another £15m will come from donations.

Plans have been submitted by architect RTKL, which is part of the consortium chosen to fund the project through the controversial Private Finance Initiative.

Artists' impressions of the new hospital will be unveiled later this month.
