It was a sight to gladden the heart of any air enthusiast -- the sight and sound of a Spitfire and Hurricane against a backdrop of bright blue sky.

The two veteran fighters, belonging to the RAF Memorial Flight, flew from their home base at Coningsby in Lincolnshire to delight crowds at the fourth annual Abingdon Fayre on the former airfield, now the base of the Army's Royal Logistic Corps.

It was a welcome return for the famous pair on Sunday, as their planned display at last year's event had to be cancelled because of strong winds. Among the other attractions were displays of model aircraft, including the Lancaster bomber made by Dave Webb, of the Wallingford group of the International Plastic Modellers' Society.

Children were able to enjoy kart racing. James Samways, four, is pictured above, leading the field.

Event co-ordinator Neil Porter said he hoped to exceed last year's total of £5,000 proceeds, which this year were intended for Douglas House, the new Respite Centre in Oxford.
