A pensioner has described how she and her sister were victims of three burglars who claimed to be police officers.

Margaret Rose, 89, was disturbed by three men who had broken into the home she shares with her sister Mary Rose, 91.

She got out of bed after seeing torchlights moving up the stairs and challenged one of the men, who told her there had been a burglary and they were checking that the women were alright.

She asked him if they were police officers, to which he gave no reply. However, she initially believed that the men had been sent by police and showed them where money was kept.

A second offender went into the room of her sister Mary, and told the 91-year-old, who has mobility difficulties: "We are police officers and we are just checking your valuables."

Margaret became suspicious when she saw two of the burglars rifling through property and challenged them.

"I said 'you are thieves -- you are robbing me'," she said.

"I was very angry. I don't doubt that they get more money a week than I do on my pension.

"Why should they come here and steal pension money which I have worked for all my life?"

The men then left, but the women were shaken by the incident. The offenders broke into their home in Stile Road, Headington, some time between 9.45pm and 10.15pm on December 22. They stole up to £400.

Police are looking for three white men. One was 5ft 10in to 6ft tall, of slim build, with a thin face and sharp features, in his late 20s. There are no further descriptions.
