Plater College in Oxford is closing down after more than 80 years following a damning inspection report by the Adult Learning Inspectorate (ALI).
The only Catholic adult residential college in England, it was founded in 1921 to widen education opportunities for disadvantaged adults. It is based in Pullens Lane, Headington.
A message on the college website says it will close on July 31 and is "no longer recruiting students for courses beyond that date".
It states that it will continue to enrol students for short courses running until early July.
Out of 10 areas covered in the ALI's report -- the equivalent of a school Ofsted inspection -- two were found to be very weak, four, unsatisfactory and four satisfactory.
The overall quality of provision was found to be inadequate and the leadership and management were described as "very weak".
Inadequate governance, badly managed communications, and poor management and implementation of complaints procedures were all criticised by the inspectors.
The college has about 150 students taking courses in IT, sociology and psychology, law and religious studies.
No-one at the college was available to comment today.
