A blunder has left electors in Oxford baffled by changes to the way they can vote in the forthcoming county council election.

The fact that all 70 members of Oxfordshire County Council are up for election on May 5 -- the same day as the General Election -- is confusing enough for many people, but the city council has now admitted it has sent out incorrect voting information.

Traditionally, each county council division was represented by one member. But because of boundary changes, the eight divisions in the city of Oxford will have two representatives from next month.

Despite this, thousands of residents have received polling cards telling them they can only vote for one councillor.

Electoral services manager Martin John, said: "Oxford City Council apologises for the administrative error.

"We will be rectifying this by placing an amendment notice explaining that people can vote for no more than two county council candidates with the Parliamentary polling card, which will be issued later this month.

"We will make it clear to the public that they can vote for no more than two candidates when they arrive at the polling station and there will be a notice in the polling booth to remind them."
