Witney knitters get together for a gossip

ALL women bitch – it’s official.

Mums in Witney have set up a Stitch ‘n Bitch group in the town – and its new members have a lot to get off their chests.

Subjects such as motherhood and grandchildren are all up for discussion – as well as knitting patterns, of course.

Organised by Jackie Wittwer, who is expecting a child in July with fiancé Richard MacKenzie, the group with the tasty name meets every Friday at 11am.

Everyone is welcome, from young mums with children to older craftspeople, and members can learn to knit and crochet while having a gossip.

Miss Wittwer, of Manor Road, said: “It’s an interesting name, but all women do bitch.

“The name is unique and different, I think we attract the people who don’t mind the name. We’ve had a few comments from outside the group saying that the name should change, but we’re not going to change it, we’re proud of it.”

Stitch ‘n Bitch was held for the first time at Delice, in High Street, last Friday and nine women turned up.

Miss Wittwer, 27, said: “I started doing crochet in December. I was reading a book called Stitch ‘n’ Bitch a few years ago and I found out there was a website – that’s how I got the idea to set one up.

“I thought it would be nice to open a new group to meet new people and have a knit at the same time.

“I have always been interested in knitting and stitching and crocheting.

“You meet up and have a coffee or a drink, most people knit or you can crochet and we chat about different things.

“I’m pregnant so we talk about babies and exchange advice about being a mother. We exchange tips about knitting and we can teach people as well.”

There is a play area at Delice so children are welcome at the free meetings.

Miss Wittwer added: “People can’t spend too much money so they like to find alternative things to do, like knitting.

“It’s not really old fashioned, it’s good to make your own things and you save money by doing these things yourselves.”
