Old Fire Station scheme goes on show

Residents can find out more tomorrow about the £3.4m plan to convert the Old Fire Station arts centre to incorporate facilities for the homeless.

People can drop in between 6.30pm and 9pm at the Ovada Gallery, in Gloucester Green, to ask questions and share ideas.

There will be a presentation about the project at 7pm by city council leader Bob Price and Duncan Shrubsole, policy director of the homelessness charity Crisis.

In December, arts groups said they feared the revamp would mean the end of large-scale theatre productions at the venue.

The event will provide a progress report and present responses to feedback received at the last event in October.

A planning application has been submitted.

Mr Price said: “This event will be an opportunity for the public to see how the many ideas that have been received have been taken on board.”

I suppose what the money is really being spent on is making people like "city council leader Bob Price and Duncan Shrubsole, policy director of the homelessness charity Crisis" feel important. It would have been cheaper to buy them big Red Army hats and they could have gone round Oxford in an open topped bus. In passing, is Crisis a real charity or simply a government front and in either case why does it neeed a "policy director". It's "policy" as a charity can surely only be to carry out the charitable functions described in the Deed which established it?

There's already plenty of facilities for the homeless in Oxford (hence why we get migrant homeless!).

I don't think traders in George St will like the homeless with their dogs hanging around, nor will the Police.

This is a stupid plan, and only getting council support because they want to close the Gatehouse to sell off for housing or more student accommodation.

Crisis is a well respected charity that's existed for 40 years. It aims to transform the lives of homeless people and to prevent homelessness. It does lobby government with regard to policy in that area, which would seem to be within its stated charitable aims.
