FIREFIGHTERS have blamed a careless smoker for a blaze in Brambling Way, Blackbird Leys.
Fire crews from the Slade and Rewley Road were called to the terraced house at 12.30am today.
The first floor of the house was engulfed in a severe fire, but by the time the crews had arrived a family of three were out of the property and safe.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus took 30 minutes to extinguish the blaze.
Station Manager Webster said: "Our crews were faced with a well developed bedroom fire caused by carelessness whilst smoking.
"Luckily they were alerted by their smoke detector which raised the alarm, so they could leave the property immediately, highlighting how important smoke detectors are."
The family had their welfare tended to by the Red Cross Victim Support unit as their home was so badly damaged.
