Dhall to represent Greens in Oxford East election

Sushila Dhall, the Oxford city and Oxfordshire county councillor, has been selected to fight Oxford East constituency for the Green Party at the general election, it was revealed this morning.

Her selection follows the departure of Peter Tatchell in December due to poor health.

Ms Dhall has lived, studied and worked in Oxford city for more than 25 and led campaigns in Oxford challenging the basis of large-scale commercial developments such as the Westgate expansion and the Northern Gateway proposals.

She works as a public sector counsellor and is the mother of an 11-year-old daughter who attends a local state school.

She said: "I am touched and proud to follow Peter Tatchell in representing the diverse and exciting constituency of Oxford East.

"My message is one of hope - the Greens offer practical ways forward out of the debt, pollution, war and profit-driven politics of today.

"I pledge my hard work, honesty and openness to Oxford East. Together we can work to make a positive difference."

Labour's Andrew Smith is the current MP for Oxford East.

The Conservative Party's prospective Parliamentary candidate for Oxford East is Ed Argar and the Liberal Democrat candidate is Steve Goddard.

Anyone want to bet on whether the Greens will keep their deposit in Oxford East this time (i.e. get more than 5% of the vote)?

It would be a first if they did!

oh dear, ifthey get in thier will be more pain and misery for the residents of oxford east, more waste of money, more hare brained schemes, more pandering to the bus/cycle brigade etc etc etc

Now, if they push through that all new builds in Oxford should have sufficient space to store recycleable materials for a fortnightly collection, garden for growing of fruit and veg with compost bin, deep bore ground source heat pump. Roof/gable end capable of accommodating solar panels/wind turbine. Not forgetting, private drive/garaging with potential for installing charging unit for electric car. Ok, back to reality... All residential streets with a 10mph speed limit, congestion charging zone inside ring road, additional tax on drive/garage space...

Considering it is quicker and cheaper to get from Greater Leys to central Reading car parks for John Lewis (or Wallingford for Waitrose) than it is take the bus or car into to the Westgate, I doubt many people on The Leys will be overly concerned about the delays to the Westgate development attributable to Susi.
