MORE than 200 people lined an Oxford street to pay tribute to a soldier who was killed as he tried to save a wounded colleague in Afghanistan.
Sgt John Amer, 30, of the 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards, died in Helmand Province on November 30. His body was repatriated to the UK yesterday.
Sgt Amer’s body was flown to RAF Lyneham in Wiltshire and the cortege was then driven to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford for a post mortem.
Sgt Amer, from Sunderland, was the 99th member of UK forces to die in Aghanistan this year and the 236th since the mission began in 2001.
Jim Lewendon, county vice-president of the Royal British Legion, was among those who gathered in Headley Way, Headington. RBL members lowered their flags, right, as the cortege came past at 2.45pm.
