A Cub pack is in danger of closing because it cannot find a leader.

The 9th Abingdon (Appleton) Cubs, based at Appleton School, in Church Road, could fold after Christmas, despite having 20 members and a waiting list of 10.

Current leader Barry Knight has been in the role for 10 years and is due to retire at the end of the year. Scout rules state a pack cannot carry on without a leader.

Chairman Mark Gordon said the children would be devastated if it had to shut.

He said: “It’s a means for them to have fun and gain experiences they otherwise wouldn’t have.

“It gives children an element of freedom and trains them in useful skills, such as camping.

“They also do a lot of good in the community through events such as fundraising car washes and quizzes.”

One of committee member Corinne Green’s two children is just about to start at the Cubs.

Mrs Green, 39, of Park Lane, Appleton, said: “If we can find someone to take over it would mean so much to everyone involved.

“At the moment sessions are held once a week on a Tuesday evening, but we could be flexible to fit around a newcomer.

“We’ve been looking for some time with no luck and it would be a great shame if we’re forced to close.”

Anyone willing to help would be provided with full training.

The role would suit anyone from the age of 18 to 65 who has a few hours each week to run the pack and who enjoys Scouting.
